Everyone knows some useful keyboard shortcuts for Windows and Mac, but we are also aware that there are a hundred more we could be using. Switching tabs on browsers was one thing I dread doing, and until I found shortcuts to switch tabs, it was time-consuming and tedious, especially when there is a severe workload to take care of.

Here I have collected some groups of hotkeys for different browsers that are extremely useful for switching tabs.

We’ll be looking into the following major browsers:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Safari
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Opera

On Google Chrome

On Google Chrome, the shortcuts to switch tabs are:

Ctrl + Shift + Tab or Ctrl + PgUp - This shortcut tracks backward through open tabs, helping you to switch to your preferred tab quickly.

Ctrl + tab number (btw 1 -8) - Go to a specific tab, alas you can only go through till number 8. Therefore, if you have more than eight tabs, use the Ctrl + Tab Shortcut.

Ctrl + Tab or Ctrl + PgDn - This shortcut tracks forward through open tabs, helping you to switch to your preferred tab quickly.

Ctrl + N - This shortcut opens a new browser window.

Ctrl + 9 - Go to the last tab on the tab bar; even if you have more than eight tabs opened.

Ctrl + Shift + T - This shortcut would open the last tab you closed; either mistakenly or intentionally.

Ctrl + T - This shortcut opens a new tab.

Alt + Home - Open homepage in the current tab.

Ctrl + F4/W - Close the current tab.

For Mac OS

Use Command (Cmd) instead of control (Ctrl) except in cases of the Ctrl + M, Ctrl + Tab, Ctrl + Shift + Tab

Cmd + Option + Right arrow - This shortcut also jumps to the next open tab

Cmd + Option + Left arrow - This shortcut again jumps to the previous open tab

On Mozilla Firefox

On Mozilla Firefox, the shortcuts to switch tabs are:

The Ctrl + Tab (Ctrl + PgDn), Ctrl + Shift + Tab (Ctrl + PgUp), Ctrl + tab number, Ctrl + 9,Ctrl + T, Ctrl + Shift + T, Ctrl + N, Ctrl + F4/W works exactly the same way as it does on the Google Chrome Browser.

Ctrl + Shift + E - This allows you to open Tabs Group View, where you can navigate around all your tabs with your arrow buttons, and press enter to choose.

Ctrl + M - This shortcut mutes and unmutes the current tab

Ctrl + Shift + PgUp - This shortcut moves current tab to the left on the tab bar.

Ctrl + Shift + PgDn - This shortcut moves current tab to the right on the tab bar.

For Mac OS

Use Command (Cmd) instead of control (Ctrl) except in cases of the Ctrl + M, Ctrl + Tab, Ctrl + Shift + Tab

Cmd + Shift + P - This shortcut opens a new private window

On Safari

On Safari, the shortcuts to switch tabs are:

Ctrl + Tab or Shift + Cmd + ] - This shortcut tracks forward through open tabs, helping you to switch to your preferred tab quickly.

Ctrl + Shift + Tab or Shift + Cmd + [ - This shortcut tracks backward through open tabs, helping you to switch to your preferred tab quickly.

Cmd + tab number (btw 1 -8) - Go to a specific tab, alas you can only go through till number 8. Therefore, if you have more than eight tabs, use the Ctrl + Tab Shortcut.

Option + click the ‘X’ button on the tab you want to leave open - This shortcut closes all tabs except the one you want to leave open.

Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + T - This shortcut would open the last tab you closed; either mistakenly or intentionally.

Ctrl/Cmd + N - This shortcut would open a new browser window.

Ctrl/Cmd + T - Open a new tab.

Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + \ - This allows you to open Tabs Group View, where you can navigate around all your tabs with your arrow buttons, and press enter to choose.

Ctrl/Cmd + F4/W - Close the current tab.

Command (Cmd) key is used when using Apple Safari on Mac while Control (Ctrl) is used on Windows.

On Microsoft Edge

On Microsoft Edge, the shortcuts to switch tabs are:

The Ctrl + Tab, Ctrl + Shift + Tab, Ctrl + tab number, Ctrl + 9,Ctrl + T, Ctrl + Shift + T, Ctrl + N, and Ctrl + W shortcuts work exactly the same way as it does on the Google Chrome Browser.

Ctrl + K - This shortcut allows you to duplicate your current tab on a new tab.

Ctrl + M - This shortcut mutes current tab

But for Mac OS

Use Command (Cmd) instead of control (Ctrl) except in cases of the Ctrl + M, Ctrl + Tab, Ctrl + Shift + Tab

Ctrl + Fn + Down arrow - This shortcut also tracks to the next tab

Ctrl + Fn + Up arrow - This shortcut also tracks to the previous tab

On Opera Browser

On Opera, the shortcuts to switch tabs are:

The Ctrl + Tab, Ctrl + Shift + Tab, Ctrl + tab number, Ctrl + 9,Ctrl + T, Ctrl + Shift + T, Ctrl + N, and Ctrl + F4/W shortcuts work exactly the same way as it does on the Google Chrome Browser.

Ctrl + Shift + N - This shortcut opens a private tab in a new window.

Amazingly, on Opera, you can customize your shortcuts to what you want. Go to Settings (Alt+P) > Advanced > Browser. Under Shortcuts section, click Configure shortcuts. Right there, you can change the keyboard shortcuts according to your preferences or add additional hotkeys.
